چکیده

This paper described the establishment of lognormal distributions for the Jacobi room model parameters with a view to improve an existing method for long-term passive measurements of the equilibrium factor using LR 115 solid-state nuclear track detectors, namely, through the proxy equilibrium factor (Fp) method. Fp is defined as (C1 þ C3)/C0 where C0, C1 and C3 are the concentrations of 222Rn, and the airborne concentrations of 218Po and 218Po (or 214Bi), respectively. The studied Jacobi room model parameters included the ventilation rate lv, the aerosol attachment rate la, the deposition rate ld of unattached progeny and the deposition rate ld of attached progeny. The lognormal distributions generated more realistic distributions for the equilibrium factor F and the unattached fraction fp of the potential alpha energy concentration, and a much tighter relationship between F and Fp, when compared with the traditionally used uniform distributions. With the new relationship between F and Fp, the accuracy of the Fp method to determine F from Fp is significantly improved. 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Long-term determination of airborne radon progeny concentrations using LR 115 detectors and the effects of thoron.

The 'proxy equilibrium factor' (F(p)) method has been developed for long-term determination of airborne radon progeny concentrations using LR 115 solid-state nuclear track detectors. In this paper, the effects of (220)Rn on the F(p) method have been studied. The correction to the track density was related to a parameter α which was the ratio of the sum of activity concentrations of alpha-partic...

Long-term determination of airborne concentrations of unattached and attached radon progeny using stacked LR 115 detector with multi-step etching

We developed the theoretical basis for long-term determination of airborne concentrations of unattached and attached radon progeny. The work was separated into two parts. First, we showed that (stacked and multiply etched) LR 115 detectors could be used to determine airborne concentrations of the short-lived radon progeny, Po and Bi. The equilibrium factor F between radon and its progeny could ...

Seasonal variation of radon, thoron and their progeny levels in dwellings of Haryana and Western Uttar Pradesh

Background: Radon and thoron are invisible, odorless, heavy and radioactive gases which are ubiquitously present in dwellings and in the environment. In the present work, seasonal variation of indoor radon, thoron and their progeny concentrations has been studied in the dwellings of industrially polluted cities in District Faridabad, Haryana and District Mathura in Uttar Pradesh. Materials and ...

Nuclear Track Detectors

Approximately half of the human exposure to radiation is due to indoor airborne shortlived progeny (decay products) of the radon gas (Rn). To measure the airborne concentrations of radon gas and/or its progeny, Nuclear Track Detectors (NTDs) are usually employed. The NTDs register the alpha particles emitted by radon gas and its progeny in the form of tracks in the NTDs, which will become visib...

Field calibration of the glass-based retrospective radon detectors for epidemiologic applications

The primary goal of this PhD research was to obtain critical information needed to further calibrate the novel glass-based retrospective radon detectors (RRDs) by characterizing the quantitative relationship between radon gas concentrations, the surface-deposited activities of various radon progeny, the airborne dose rate, and various residential environmental factors through both actual field ...
